highlights of the week--
--conference with elder christofferson. my comp was hoping he was here to announce a temple in salta, but no annoucement was made. he spoke just to the missionaries on saturday morning. all the missionaries in the entire mission were there. that was cool. pres. levrino said that was the only time since he´s been pres that we were all together. elder jay jenson, his wife, and sis. christofferson also spoke--all in great spanish, though elder christofferson´s accent was by far the best. elder christofferson served his mission in northern argentina, and in salta and in tucuman--part of our mission. he talked about the process of assigning missionaries to missions-that was neat to hear. he said it´s one of his favorite assignments, that it is always very clear where a missionary should go, and although the missionary could be successful in lots of places, heavenly father specifically wants them in a certain mission. he opened the remainder of the time to questions from the congregation. the questions were very good and focused on ways to be better missionaries--how to bettern discern the needs of investigators (like ammon and king lamoni), how to work with members to get referrals, how to better recognize promptings of the spirit, how to strengthen faith. on sunday, we had a special stake conference and pres. arnold, pres of south america south area, spoke (and his wife too, also in great spanish). we had three investigators at the conference, not many compared to other companionships, but our record so far. i think they all had a good experience.
--at the conf on saturday, you will never guess who i saw...bro. dalrymple! he works for the church producing movies of the ministry of the 12 apostles. he travels around the world with them, filming their talks and interviewing members. last week he was in africa. anyway, i recognized him, shook his hand and said hello, he looked at my name tag and said, SIS MAGNUSSON! he took a couple pics of me and my comp and after the meeting interviewed me and hna rojas! not sure if i´ll become famous, but who knows, eh? keep your eyes out for me on lds.org. :) he asked how i recognized him and i said, hello, we´re still watching your christmas video! he laughed. he said to tell my parents hello.
--hna rojas and i came up with a great way to teach the plan of salvation to kids--we´re teaching a 9 year old boy that is very interested, but also gets a little distracted during lessons (hello, he´s 9). it´s very interactive and involves a sheet, jump rope, gloves (yay for the object lesson of spirit/body from fhe´s in my youth!), visual aids made by yours truly...super great. we haven´t been able to teach him yet, and i´m getting a little tired of carrying everything around with us every day. hopefully we can teach him tonight.
--we have some great people we´re woking with:
DULCE. 12 years old, lives with her grandma TESSI who is super inactive but wants her granddaughter to have the good influence of the church in her life. Tessi is super great too. our 2nd visit with her, she was jabbering away, then stopped mid-sentence and turned to me and asked, "can you understand me? i just realized that maybe you don´t¨!" funny. dulce says she feels good when she prays and asked us when we would bring her a book of mormon to read. she and tessi went to the conference with us on sunday and dulce wore my guatemala skirt because she doesn´t have church attire.
PALACIOS FAMILY
. maybe i wrote about them already? mom and two older daughters are meeting with us regularly. mom read all the introductory parts of the book of mormon and daughter areceli read 3 nephi 11. other daughter laura isn´t as committed, but particaptes in lessons. hopefully we can get them to attend church, because they have baptism dates for december!
JOSE. i hated teaching lessons to jose, because he has no teeth so i can´t understand him, and he´s crazy--only talks about metaphysics and reincarnation and hokey-pokey stuff. we would go nowhere in lessons. he´s a referral from a member in the ward (elvira), a
nd she has come with us to our lessons. hna rojas and i decided not to committ so much time to teaching him, but yesterday hna rojas was pretty adament about stopping by. elvria must have been working more with him, because he was asking questions about stuff in the bible and and was WAY more receptive to our message. he brought up some metaphysics stuff and i thought, no way did i come to argentina to argue about this! so i gave him a book of mormon and bore my testimony about it and committed him to read and pray about it. i felt my mouth "being filled" as i opened it and hna rojas afterwards said she felt the same way as she was answering his questions. great faith-strengthening experience.
pa asked if i´ve had an interview with pres. levrino yet. the day i arrived i had my first interview with him in the mission office. i was way emotional, being grateful to have arrived safely, having spent 2 1/2 days traveling to a foreign country, and getting only 6 hours of sleep in that time...he asked about my family, what i hoped to learn from my mission, why i decided to serve...i really don´t remember much. but i remember that he was very kind. and he said a very nice prayer at the end. i have another interview with him on the 18th.
hna rojas and i and another companionship that meets in our ward building are trying to start up an english class as a way to get more investigators. so far, we haven´t been able to advertise very good so no one has showed up. hopefully this week?
